On the 10th Anniversary of the United Nations International Day against Nuclear Tests, the United Nations Association of Australia (NSW), invites you to join us when The Honourable Michael Kirby AC CMG speaks on the control of nuclear weapons.

The Commonwealth of Australia is a founding member of the United Nations and was a prominent negotiator in the creation of the United Nations Charter. Since 1945, the United Nations has worked with the international community to restrain and prohibit nuclear testing by ratifying instruments to support multilateral efforts to achieve the general and complete disarmament under strict and effective international control. Even with the ratification of international treaties and other multilateral efforts, the international community is concerned that there is resistance from a number of member states and independent nation states not in the United Nations.

The Honourable Michael Kirby AC CMG has spoken on the nuclear non-proliferation regime as Chairman of the United Nations Human Rights Council’s Commission of Inquiry on Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and will speak on:

Origins of the testing of nuclear weapons.
Testing of the original two nuclear weapons over Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945, and failure of nations to prohibit and destroy the stockpiles of nuclear weapons in the 75 years since then.
Treaty on the prohibition of nuclear weapons that is before the United Nations General Assembly for adoption and which would prohibit the possession, use and threat of use of nuclear weapons.
122 countries have signed the Treaty, including in Australia’s region such as New Zealand and Timor-Leste.
