Details below:

8.30am – 12.00pm

Morning workshop: RF Filtering and transmitter multi-coupling systems

The workshop aims to provide industry professionals with targeted industry-specific training as it relates to multi-coupling, to enhance their professional learning and development pathways. The workshop will contain theory and practical components.

The workshop will be facilitated by Chris Stevens (SLSA Lifesaving Communications Advisor) and presented by Mark Mezzapica (Chief Technology Officer, RFI Wireless)

12.00pm – 1.00pm

A light lunch will be provided for those attending training sessions

1.00pm – 4.30pm

Afternoon workshop: Lightning protection and tower earthing for communications towers - option 1

One of the serious issues facing all communications providers is the protection of sensitive equipment from power surges caused by electrical storms. This workshop will explain the causes and effects of lightning events, as well as outline the earthing requirements for communications towers and protection devices. Topics to be presented include - Is there such a thing as lightning protection/What exactly is lightning and what causes it/What mechanisms lead to the damage caused by a lightning strike/How to take control and mitigate this damage/How to identify protected zones at a radio site/Lightning strike waveform characteristics/Calculation of typical tower voltages created by a lightning strike/Lightning pulse characteristics in coaxial cables/The use of lightning protection devices/The importance of an adequate grounding system/How to implement an adequate grounding system.

The workshop addresses the common misconception that nothing can really be done to protect your sensitive radio equipment from the forces of Mother Nature. An understanding of the basic principles behind the nature of lightning events will show that it is in fact possible to mitigate the damage caused by a lightning strike through the use of appropriate protectors in conjunction with an adequate grounding system.

The workshop will be presented by Kaine Mulder from RFI Technology and facilitated by ARCIA

Afternoon workshop: Mapping and GIS fundamentals for Critical Communications - option 2

This workshop will explore the fundamentals of GIS and mapping and how it relates to Critical Communications and Radio Management Systems.  Participants will explore Geographic Information Systems and Mapping engines, GIS data formats and sources, scale, orientation and mapping projections. The workshop will examine commonly used industry GIS software packages, data availability and cost. It will also provide insights on how to integrate GIS and mapping engines into radio management systems and other critical communication applications. The workshop will explore what opportunity exist to utilise respective state government’s mapping engines and how to integrate them into your mapping systems.

The workshop will be presented by Chris Stevens (CartGIS MD & SLSA Comms advisor) and facilitated by ARCIA

Important notes:

  • These are industry accredited training sessions hosted by ARCIA as part of their Professional Development Training series. Attendees will be required to complete a workbook which will be collected at the end of the session for verification of the understanding of the training contents. The workbook will then be returned to the attendee together with a certificate of attendance and completion from ARCIA.

  • Each attendee will need to nominate which afternoon workshop they wish to be registered for on the booking form. ARCIA reserves the right to withdraw one of the afternoon workshops if insufficient numbers are registered, in which case attendees will be registered for the remaining workshop.

  • The venue capacity means we will have limits on the numbers of attendees at all sessions, that includes both training sessions.

  • The GIS & Mapping workshop will require attendees to bring a laptop computer and each attendee will be notified of some particular software that will need to be downloaded and loaded on the computer. All software is publicly available and has been used at several training workshops.
