Event description

A six-week hands-on machine learning workshop for those wanting to break into the AI industry.

Over 6 weeks, with 3 contact hours per week, you will get to grips with deep learning through Python, TensorFlow and Google Colaboratory. This is a hands-on technical workshop, with a substantial programming component.

What can you expect to receive and achieve?
  • An intuitive understanding of deep learning and the essential concepts,
  • Hands-on work in solving problems,
  • Experience building models for typical domains of deep learning: understanding images, videos, and text,
  • Individual and group support,
  • Completed a selection of projects in TensorFlow,
  • A supportive and growing community during and after the workshop.
Every week we will ...
  • Have group discussions and learn together in a collaborative way,
  • Consolidate your knowledge through exercises,
  • Build on work from previous weeks through homework,
  • Provide additional support (other than teaching hours) through office hours.
Who's it for?
  • Data scientists wishing to move into AI and deep learning,
  • Programmers looking to build, work with, or otherwise work with AI or deep learning projects,
  • and broadly, technical people looking to break into the AI industry, develop a new business or product, join an existing AI team, or generally contribute to the AI ecosystem.

At the end of the workshop series participants will have a showreel of completed projects to demonstrate their ability.

Your instructors

During the workshop you will be working with Noon and Ruth.

Noon van der Silk

Noon van der Silk is the director of Braneshop and lead trainer.

Noon has 18+ years experience in various forms of software engineering, application development, and the design and implementation of machine learning + AI systems. Within AI he has a special interest in the field of computer vision and interactive art.

Noon has a research background, obtaining a Masters in Pure Mathematics, with a focus on quantum computing.

Noon is particularly passionate about empowering people through skill development.

Dr Ruth Pearson

Dr Ruth Pearson is a researcher, trainer and mentor.

Ruth has a cosmic-microwave-background in physics, with a PhD in cosmology, along with academic experience in Europe, U.S.A. and Australia. She loves maths, science and cats and wants to use AI to aid vet medicine.

As a teacher, Ruth is particularly interested in helping people to gain a deep, complete, and enjoyable understanding of concepts.

We're here to help you understand and adopt AI. At the Braneshop, we love all things AI. We spend our time bringing diverse people into the field, and removing the barriers for those that have faced them, so that the resulting technology better reflects our communities, and addresses all our needs. We know that AI can be used for amazing things, but also that there are many problems and potential solutions that won't be discovered unless everyone is involved. This is our vision: the powerful capabilities of AI in the hands of us all. We specialise in teaching these techniques in an intuitive and hands-on way. Our workshops are organised in a group setting and learning takes place through a mix of theory and practice.
