Australian Government health data indicates that about 1 in 6 adolescents meet the criteria for a mental health diagnosis in any given year!
What is YMHFA?
YMHFA teaches PRACTICAL, EASY TO IMPLEMENT and EVIDENCED BASED strategies to support a young person experiencing a mental health problem, worsening of a problem or a crisis.
Every adult who lives or works with adolescents should do this course!
The great news is that effective early strategies can greatly reduce the chances of a mental health problem effecting relationships, educational opportunity and general well-being or contributing to other social problems. There has been considerable research done around the effectiveness of this training. Many high profile people have advocated for this course, including POTUS Barack Obama and Michelle Obama advocated for this course to address mental health issues in American Schools. MHFA was developed in Australia, but is now taught in 30 countries worldwide.
Modules covered include: Adolescent Development, Communication with Young People, Australian Mental Health Data, Depression, Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Eating Disorders, Substance Misuse Disorders, Suicide Prevention, Responses to Trauma, Psychosis, Aggressive Behaviour and Deliberate Self Injury.

Mark's deep insights into adolescents, mental health and education combine to provide participants with a unique experience in this training.
YMHFA has been proven through research to increase understanding of common Mental Health problems. YMHFA training has even been proven to lower the incidence of mental health problems among those people who have been trained!

Mark Smith is an educational leader with extensive experience working in a diverse range of schools and youth focused organisations. Mark has been a special education teacher, head teacher and deputy principal for over 20 years. Mark has also worked in hospitals and youth and disability organisations in direct care and advocacy roles. Mark is a consultant trainer with MHFA International, in this role Mark works with the highly acclaimed team who developed the MHFA program that has now been adopted in over 25 countries. Mark's expertise in delivering MHFA Programs comes from deep insights into adolescents, mental health and education to provide participants with a unique training experience. Mark is highly engaging, utilises humour and shares personal narratives to support participant learning.
