Qualitative Research Methods - Course 1: Foundational Issues in Qualitative Research (Online)

Suitable for first year HDRstudents.
This 4-week course will introduce participants to the nature of qualitative research methodologies and what makes them distinctive. Participants will develop critical appreciation of the ethical dimensions of studying humans and societies. One of the main aims of the course is to help participants develop a critical perspective of the qualitative research process itself.
•Week 1: Epistemology, ontology and scientific methods
•Week 2: Qualitative research paradigms
•Week 3: Logic and qualitative approach to data
•Week 4: Ethics and politics in studying humans and societies
This course is prerequisite for other four courses in this program. It is offered in both Autumn and Spring sessions. Completion Certificate awarded for students attending all four weeks.
This course supports your development in the Research Skills and Knowledge element of the MAPARC research student capability framework and the Research Lifecycle element of the UTS Research Outcomes Capability framework.
Due to social distancing policy at UTS, this course is now delivered online, with recorded lectures posted on UTS Online and tutorials on Zoom. The previously advertised time of 9.30 am to 12.30 pm on Thursdays for face to face classes has been changed. Recorded lectures are posted which participants can access on UTS online when the course begins. Tutorials are conducted on Zoom (for security reason, Zoom ID for tutorials are posted on UTSOnline only for enrolled students). What if I can no longer attend, do I need to cancel?
Yes. Please contact the Researcher Development team at grs_rd@uts.edu.au for workshop cancellation.
If you fail to cancel your registration and are absent three or more times in a session, you will be suspended from the program for 1 year. You will be notified by email prior to your suspension being applied.
How will I know the location for this event if it is not confirmed yet?
You will be sent a reminder email approximately one week prior to the course. This will include the class location, date, time and anything you may need to know prior to the workshop.
