Creative Business 101

Event description

Are you wanting to learn more about the basics of business and administration in the arts and creative industries?

Are you wondering about how to set yourself up as a creative freelancer?

Perhaps you’re a musician, dancer, actor, visual artist, photographer, illustrator or writer.

You’ve got the creative part of your craft sorted but all the other stuff - writing invoices, tax and bookkeeping, time management, marketing, developing a social media presence, creating a basic website, superannuation, unions and support for professionals in your field, for example - is just too overwhelming to even think about.

The truth is though, the majority of creative professionals and artists ARE freelancers. There aren’t many businesses or organisations around that employ artists full-time for a long period of time. Jobs are mostly contractual or “gig-based” and you’ll have to look after all the nitty gritty parts in your career yourself.

And you might be thinking, “I have a creative mind! I’m no good at numbers, spreadsheets, time-management, or that other stuff. I just wanna do my art!”

Which is fine, if you’re a hobbyist and don’t plan to make any kind of income from what you create.

The good news is that business skills are well…SKILLS! They can be taught and learned. And with the right mindset, can be seen as a creative project in themselves.

We also live in a time where all you really need to know are the basics. The rest can be outsourced, delegated and automated! Ahh, the wonders of the internet.

At MVC we believe that if you see how business is inherently creative and somewhat of an art form in itself, you’ll be able to apply it with ease to your creative career.

Have ever felt any kind of anxiety around the question…

 “Do you have an ABN?”

If so, this intensive 2-hour workshop is for you!

Whether you’re just starting out in your creative career or are more established but want clarity around some particular topics, come along and we’ll do our best to answer your questions based on our own experiences.
