Recent research on all deaths due to new psychoactive stimulants in Australia.

Seminar Summary:

The presentation will address mortality due to new psychoactive stimulants and hallucinogens. These cover a wide range of “designer drugs” that have risen to prominence in the 21st century and become a source of clinical concern. They include drugs such as the synthetic cathinones and NBOMe. New data on the characteristics of Australian fatalities, the circumstances of death, and their toxicology will be presented.


Speaker Bio:

Shane Darke, is a Professor at the National Drug & Alcohol Research Centre (UNSW) and a leading world expert on the health effects associated with illicit drug use. He has authored more than 280 articles and four books. His specialist research area is drug-related harm, with a strong focus on mortality. He has published widely on overdose, suicide, psychopathology, trauma, treatment outcomes and toxicology.
