While many people think of the Day of the Dead as a sort of Mexican Halloween, it’s actually a lot more than that. Day of the Dead is more joyful than the scary, terror driven Halloween, and although the theme is essentially death, it is a day of celebration in remembrance of those we have lost.
It originated from Aztec, Toltec and Nahua cultures in which mourning death is seen to be disrespectful. In Mexico today, this colourful event is a cheerful one. During this time you’ll see people dressed up with makeup and costumes, there’ll be parties, dancing and singing, as well as offerings made to loved ones who have passed.
