Sexual, Domestic and Family Violence and the Law: Training for Community Workers

This workshop is designed for community workers including:

  • specialist domestic violence workers
  • social workers and counsellors
  • case workers
  • support workers
  • healthcare professionals
  • settlement workers
  • housing and refuge workers
  • teachers and education providers

By the end of the workshop, you should be able to:

  1. Identify legal issues associated with Domestic Violence (DV) and specify where to refer  clients for legal advice and other DV service providers
  2. Explain to clients what an Apprehended Violence Order (AVO) is and assist clients in obtaining and making the most of their AVOs
  3. Explain to clients what Victims Support is and provide relevant referrals to clients and explain there are limits
  4. Identify technology facilitated abuse and explore practical steps to keep clients safe
  5. Assist clients in police complaints processes with a view to reforming police policy
  6. Provide practical tips on how to support a client who has been sexually assaulted
  7. Immigration law and family violence

The workshops will be run by experienced solicitors from Women's Legal Service NSW. They will be practical and use examples, case studies and activities to increase your confidence in identifying legal issues and providing accurate legal information and referrals.

We especially encourage workers from rural, regional and remote areas to register for this workshop as well as our workshop: Women and Family Law, which will be held on 26 September 2019.
