Event Schedule:

6:00 pm - 8:00 pm: Professor Hicks and Gloria Alvarez, audience Q&A, followed by book signing.

Intimate venue - very limited capacity

Join world-renowned philosopher Dr. Stephen Hicks (Canadian-American) and the amazing Gloria Alvarez (all the way from Guatemala) for an evening keynote and dialogue event as they navigate anti-liberalism in the two Americas, North and South, why the cult – or strong following of Che Guevara? Are the postmodern leftists “neo-Marxist”? Is the alt-right a bigger worry than the left? Capitalism’s economic successes are so obvious, so why do so many hate it?

From the philosophy that lead to the catastrophes of the 20th Century, the manipulation of that philosophy to maintain the ideals of socialism, from Gloria’s personal account of seeing empty supermarket shelves in Venezuela while being followed by the secret police, to the growing popularity of socialism in the Americas, this will be a unique chance to understand the root causes of postmodernism, why we have ideologies taking charge today, how we got here and what can be done moving forward.

Gloria Alvarez is the program director of the National Civic Movement of Guatemala, an organization that advocates for the participation of an informed, responsible, and active citizenry in national politics. She
is a Guatemalan Political Scientist with qualifications in International Affairs. Gloria has special focus in International Development and Economics and comes from Cuban and Hungarian roots. She has positioned herself as a reference of libertarianism in the Americas and Europe and has already given more than 250 conferences in her young life and regularly appears on radio and Television.

Gloria became renowned throughout the American continent due to her speech denouncing populist regimes which went viral on YouTube in 2014, reaching more than 20 million views in three days. She has become the benchmark leader for a new generation that is beginning to see with new eyes, unique ways of contributing to politics. The renowned journalist, Jorge Ramos, introduced her as "the future president of Guatemala." The Journal of the Americas called her "the whip of the Socialism of the XXI century that seeks the regeneration of democracy across the continent." The Journal ABC from Spain referred to her as "the political scientist who has demystified Podemos.” (A Spanish left-wing political party). After Gloria’s travels through Uruguay, El Pais Uruguay labelled her "Hurricane Gloria." The Clarin of Argentina described her as, "The Guatemalan political scientist. Gloria Alvarez is impressive: First for her feminine attributes and her deep sympathy to the utmost. Then, for her oratory eloquence when transmitting her ideas regardless whether you share them or not.”

Gloria has published three books:
1. The Populist Deceit why are our countries ruined and how to rescue them. It has become an international best seller in Spain, Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Guatemala and El Salvador so far.
2. How To Talk To A Progressive: why socialism harms the poor.
3. How to talk to a Conservative: why Libertarianism is better than conservatism at the battle of ideas

While Gloria is travelling all around Australia, speaking to younger folks, due to The Insititute of Public Affairs, this will be Gloria’s only appearance open to the general public.
