2018 Inspirational Women Overall Winners

Angela Stansfield, 2018 Young Inspirational Woman
, was awarded for her commitment, in this challenging economic times, to try and improve the lives of the destitute.

When the ordinary driver passes a Vinnies van pulled up on some dark night, it might not get more than a moment’s thought. But there are dedicated people behind that ongoing concern for the destitute, and one of the leaders in this is Angela Stansfield, who works full-time at Sydney Children's Hospitals Foundation raising vital funds for children with Cancer but then also goes out as a volunteer to help.

She has worked eight years with the St Vincent de Paul Society, leading and inspiring volunteers, organising fundraising events and encouraging communities to take part and help raise awareness for many issues which include homelessness, sick kids and disadvantaged families.

Angela has been pivotal in organising the “Homeless Winter Appeal” that collects non-perishable food and blankets that are distributed by organisations such as Mission Beat and Oz Harvest.

Joining Parramatta Lions allows Angela to continue to lead and support ongoing projects.

Dr Vera Sestinech, 2018 Inspirational Woman - Urban, was awarded for her service above self and her ability to inspire others to go the extra mile in bringing life changing medical practices to developing countries.

As with the great ophthalmologist Fred Hollows, Dr Vera Sistenich has seen the greatest need for her medical specialist – in this case emergency medicine – among marginalised people, such as Australia’s Aborigines and detained asylum seekers.

Similar to Fred, she has reached out to the disadvantaged in the Third World, focusing in her case on the Congo, where she has been team leader of the Emergency Medicine Education Project, a RAWCS initiative sponsored by the Rotary E-Club of Greater Sydney.

In 2015, Vera initiated a far-reaching training program in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a nation of more than 80 million people with no paramedics and few ambulances. She has now trained more than 400 doctors and nurses in 7 provinces and has moved on to help develop an academic program in emergency medicine.

Even through her hobby as an apiarist, she has devoted the proceeds to her Congo project.
