Event description

It Will Be Chaos provides a timely, compelling, and intimate look at the human consequences of the refugee crisis spanning the Mediterranean, as told through the stories of brave asylum seekers and the Italian locals who are faced with their arrival. The film which unfolds between Italy and the Balkan corridor, features two unforgettable refugee stories of human strength and resilience that bring a deeply personal perspective to the political crisis still unfolding across the globe.

The documentary highlights the story of Aregai, an Eritrean man fleeing repression and deprivation, and the journey of a Syrian mother and father, Wael and Doha, who lead their family in a perilous Mediterranean crossing. Aregal survives a horrific shipwreck only to become ensnared in Italy’s faltering immigration system. Elsewhere, Wael and Doha navigate the long trek from Turkey to Germany with their four young children.

Stirring and complex, It Will Be Chaos is a harrowing look at what refugees go through when forced to escape war and terror at home. This revealing documentary highlights some of the troubling anti-immigrant populism and logistical issues they encounter after reaching the shores of Europe, which prevent them from living in freedom and safety.

Featuring Giusi Nicolini, mayor of Lampedusa and peace prize winner and U. S. diplomat William L. Swing, Director General of the International Organization for Migration, the two officials agree that the top priority must be “to save people from dying” and how they must “take urgent action and strong international coordination”, acknowledging how it is their duty to “receive the refugees with decent and adequate reception standards”.
