Event description

Transition 3081 is running a series of 10 Sustainable Living Workshops in 2019 with support from a 2018 Banyule Environmental Sustainability Grant. This is the 4th workshop in this series.

Come along and learn how to make reusable shopping bags and a cutlery holder (from upcycled clothing and fabric) in preparation for Plastic Free July.

We will show you both a no-sew method, as well as use a sewing machine during this workshop.

Facilitators: Transition 3081 is teaming up with Jasmine and Rosie from Textile Art Community Art Space (TACAS).

Rosie Torr is the designer and maker behind Blavatsky Design. She has been sewing since she was 8 and has always loved making things. She produces clothing for women and children, including wedding dresses and costumes. She also produces soft furnishings such as cushions, sofa cushions, beanbags, banquette seats, bunting and quirky soft toys. If it can be sewn then she will do it. All her designs are beautifully made and give a nod to the mid-century modern era but with universal appeal and modern, sustainably produced fabrics.

Jasmine Ofaolain is a mumpreneur with a background in design, crafting, sewing, community circus and performance. She is loving getting back into creating after taking a hiatus after the birth of her little cub. She is Mumma Bear at www.bearfootcubs.com and a board member at TACAS. She has a passion for creating new treasures from discarded objects through upcycling and eco printing.

Both ladies live in the post code area of 3081 in Banyule, love winter and you can find their studios at TACAS in Heidelberg West.

Location : The Harmony Centre, The Mall, Heidelberg West.  Please arrive 15 mins earlier to settle in.

Spaces are limited book today! Don’t miss this opportunity ! Very cheap $15 or $26 including set of bamboo cutlery.

What you will learn:

  • How to make reusable shopping and vegetable bags from old/worn-out t-shirts and singlets - a great way to divert used clothing from landfill AND eliminate the use for single use plastic bags. A simple no-sew method allows you to take the skill home and teach your family and friends.
  • How to make a neat cutlery carrier to keep your own cutlery handy for when eating on the run. We will be following a great pattern put out by Pip Magazine.
  • We will also discuss more ideas about reducing plastic waste.

What you will get:

  • 1 reusable shopping bag to take home - if you have a favourite old T-shirt which you never wear, but just can’t part with, bring it along and turn it into something new.
  • 1 reusable produce bag
  • 1 reusable cutlery carrier which you can carry a set of cutlery in for when you eat on the run.
  • Opportunity to purchase your own set of bamboo cutlery which are lightweight and durable. Please ensure you select the ticket type including bamboo cutlery as we need to pre order them (sets of fork, spoon, knife and straw for $11).
  • All materials provided, unless you specifically want to use an old T-shirt or fabric of your own.
  • A lot of fun!
  • Networking opportunity with like-minded people in our neighbourhood
  • We won't say no, if you want to bring your excess produce.

What to bring:

  • Yourself
  • A pair of fabric scissors if you have them
  • A set of your own light weight cutlery if you are not purchasing the Bamboo Set (so we can make sure they fit in your Cutlery Carrier.
  • An old T-shirt if you would like to turn it into a reusable bag
  • If you have a bit of fabric you love, bring it along for the cutlery carrier. Cotton/linen type fabrics work best.
  • A reusable container if you would like to purchase some take away lunch from the delicious Multicultural food vendors in The Mall. You can test out your new cutlery carrier straight away!  So we can sit on the bench in the mall after the workshop and share the lunch if you are not in hurry to go home afterwards.

Sorry, but for OHS reasons, kids have to be over 12 years old to attend, and have a valid ticket.

We are supporting Humanitix.  Ticket sale profits go to Meals for disadvantaged school children.
