Micro Block Magic - Sustainable House Day

Event description

I originally met the team at I-Smart when they were constructing my sister’s home not far away and after reviewing the process and benefits for health, sustainability and energy efficiency I decided to build a passive home. One of the better benefits of the build type was the premanufactured structure which was a valued consideration due to the micro block size and challenging access to the rear lane way location. The site was also subject to the retention of the original building footings, so a lightweight structure was essential to the design. A timber framed premanufactured passive house was a very good fit for both the block and my needs.

All of these items combined with the Passive house construction method indicated a clear choice for this one of a kind micro block build. Being environmentally conscious and considering future proofing my home for both health benefits and lower living costs but still maintaining a comfortable and beautiful home was challenging but rewarding.

The home facilitates the use of cross ventilation if required though not essential in a Passive House. Maximum use of orientation with consideration of council requirements for privacy screening on the block was again difficult but strategic placement of windows and living spaces inside the home ensured the maximum benefits to accompany the passive house elements. The use of a lightweight timber framed structure and use of both recycled and recyclable materials have reduced the carbon footprint of the building substantially. Premanufacturing of the building structure also reduced the waste on the building significantly, almost 75% which was again a very influential factor in building sustainably and with timber frame.

Overall my home is one of the highest performing buildings in WA and boasts beautiful design elements, world leading technology and ground breaking building practices. I am very pleased with the outcome and love my new home
