Event description

About the conference

The Australian Accessibility Conference (OZeWAI and PWAC) conference is being held at VisAbility Perth, The Perron Centre from 11-13 February 2020.

OZeWAI is the Australian Web Adaptability Initiative, a strong and established group of members proud to provide a valuable source of information on accessibility issues and ideas to the broader community. The OZeWAI conference brings together the most knowledgeable digital accessibility experts, specialists and researchers from all over the world, as well as leaders in the industry, government and non-profit organisations to explore and support digital inclusion topics and ideas.

This conference provides three full days of technical, research and panel sessions, presentations and practical workshops on cutting edge issues related to WCAG, WAI and online digital accessibility. There are also many opportunities for networking and socialising with key speakers, panel members and attendees.

In 2020, we are partnering with the Perth Web Accessibility Camp to co-host the Conference in Perth.

Registration details

All registration levels include morning tea, afternoon tea and lunch and a $10 OZeWAI membership.

We can be flexible around costs if you are unemployed or from a small not-for-profit, or if you are planning to send a large number of people. Please contact us to discuss and we will do our best to help.

Please also let us know if you have any dietary or accessibility requirements.

Who should attend OZeWAI Conferences?

We always try to plan for the participants we expect to join us. The following list is not exhaustive but should be indicative:

  • Professionals. If we want to create an accessible digital world, skills and techniques must be ingrained in the designers, developers, content producers and managers who make it happen. Digital accessibility depends on the expertise of technical and creative people and we ensure that OZeWAI is a good forum for extending their understanding of accessibility.
  • Exhibitors. Yes, we especially like our trade partners. We cannot solve adaptability problems without the tools and expertise they offer and we encourage their participation to demonstrate the solutions they create to address accessibility problems.
  • Educators. If we want an accessible future, it'll be as a result of an education that teaches inclusion and accessibility and is itself inclusive and accessible. We welcome people working in the educational domain, at any level and with any job focus. We continue the practice of having a stream of events designed especially for this community.
  • Internationalisation and multi-lingual content developers and managers. Providing resources in multiple languages, and resources that are suitable for international use, is not easy. Experts and novices can work together on this topic.
  • Symbolic language resource developers. Using the Web to distribute maths, science, music and other symbolically represented content in a standard way is essential if everyone is to be able to access it.
  • Information managers. A significant new group of professionals who are able to make a difference to the accessibility of resources using metadata are especially welcome at OZeWAI.
  • Researchers. Adaptability is a lively field. There is some exciting research being done and the results are sometimes surprising. Papers that report this research are welcomed. Where papers have already been published elsewhere, presenters might like to submit a short paper to present their work in this forum.
  • Managers. Just how critical is good management to adaptability? We appreciate that it is crucial but also that often managing the associated activities means working in a new domain for those responsible. This stream is designed to help managers and those responding to managers' concerns. Managers often want to know what they should know, what they should do, what they should expect others to do, and how much it will all cost.
  • Users and ideas people! Without both these, nothing would happen!
