Software Carpentries Instructor Training

Event description

The University of Technology Sydney has signed on for institutional membership with "The Carpentries", an organisation that teaches foundational coding and data science skills to researchers worldwide. We now have 15 seats in their Instructor Training program, focused on enabling researchers to run workshops for their colleagues in software carpentry or data carpentry.

This would be an excellent opportunity for researchers with some coding, scripting and data wrangling experience to gain formal training in teaching software and data science. It would be particularly useful for PostDocs as they could then run courses for fellow students and staff.

Please Note:

** This provides training to you, following your accreditation, to run software or data carpentry courses.

** This training does not teach programming or data processing. However you do not have to be expert either, as the pedagogic model is collaborative learning. Both you and your participants will learn from your mistakes.

** It is a 2 day course.

** If you confirm to us that you will attend then there is an obligation on you to attend.

IMPORTANT: This course is free to you but it costs eResearch a significant amount to cover the costs. After doing an Instructor Training program you are expected to run a Carpentries workshop, at some time convenient to you, at a research institution (preferably UTS).

Details are below.  Particularly read:
https://docs.carpentries.org/topic_folders/for_instructors/new_instructors.html

After completing the Instructor Training program you should be able to teach software and data carpentry courses:

We have arranged on-site training for the two days of Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 December 2019. Two Trainers (from Brisbane and New Zealand) will travel to the UTS to provide this training for us. The venue is a lecture room in the Engineering Building here at UTS.
