South Channel Fort Tour and Snorkel, Port Phillip Bay
Date and Time
Ahoy me hearties!
Join us as we explore the Jewel of Port Phillip Bay!
South Channel Fort is an artificial island in Port Phillip Bay that was constructed in the 1880s to illuminate the channel at night to protect Melbourne from attack from ships coming through the Heads.
Today, the fort is an iconic part of the Port Phillip Heads Marine National Park. It is considered one of the most incredible dive sites in the Bay, with the enormous diversity of fish, seaweeds and soft corals all waiting to be experienced.
We will also have the opportunity to take a tour inside the fort. Together, we will step back in time to when over 100 officers and men lived there, defending the Bay from possible attack. It is not unusual to come across Little Penguins hanging out the armoury as we wander the rooms and halls of this incredible man-made structure surrounded by the ocean.
The plan for the day involves catching the boat from the Queenscliff Harbour and making our way to South Channel Fort. Once we arrive, we will tour the fort, before slipping into our wetsuits, masks and fins and plunging into this spellbinding underwater world with our passionate snorkel guides.
One back on dry land, we’ll enjoy a hearty lunch surrounded by soaring seabirds before we make for home.
All snorkel gear is provided. All you’ll need to bring is a water bottle, hat, warm jacket and a passion for adventure! This is a trip you’ll never forget.
