Surfacing Series: A new series for abstract, experimental and outsider composition. The first edition explores the idea and application of expansiveness in music.

ALASKA ORCHESTRA
PETER HOLLO (TANGENTS, RAVEN)
LIGHT / LUKE DE ZILVA
EDWIN SHEATHER (DEAD CHINA DOLL)
ANGELA GARRICK + WENDY SCRIVEN

Alaska Orchestra is an ever-evolving group led by artist, musician and composer Megan Alice Clune. Mostly recently, the group performed two sold-out nights of  Brian Eno’s seminal ambient work Ambient 1: Music for Airports commissioned by Sydney Opera House for Vivid LIVE. Other performances include works by Philip Glass and Glenn Branca.

Peter Hollo is the cellist in locally and internationally acclaimed instrumental group Tangents. As a multi-instrumentalist solo musician, Peter’s work spans layered avant-garde classical to widescreen analogue-meets-digital atmospherics via the use of cello, piano, looping and effects, and laptop programming. Peter has performed at the TedX festival, City Recital Hall and Sydney Opera House among others. He is also the host of Utility Fog on FBi Radio.

Edwin Sheather is the frontman of Sydney’s Dead China Doll. His work with the band and as a solo artist leans heavily on a balance between beauty and chaos, dense synthesiser sounds and overwhelming and brutal orchestral sections. After relocating to rural New South Wales due to the passing of his mother, Edwin has spent three years living in isolation, recording his experience. His music paints an intimate picture of rural life, grief, existentialism, nihilism and hope. Surfacing Series 1 marks an incredibly rare solo performance by Edwin who has performed with international acts such as Boris, Earth and Bardo Pond.

Artist and musician Angela Garrick has been a mainstay of Australian experimental and underground music for more than a decade. She has toured internationally in various musical incarnations – including under the moniker Angie, as well as in Circle Pit and Ruined Fortune among others. Angela will perform a rare show of her solo piano work, following on from two recent releases, and will be accompanied by visuals from Melbourne-based film artist Wendy Scriven.

LIGHT is the recent solo project of Sydney musician Luke de Zilva, whose music sits somewhere between abstract and classical songwriting. Luke’s sound and performances have been characterised by his “commanding voice, haunting songwriting and severe pacing” – Deafen County. His first release is a split album with Melbourne instrumental musician Henry Lloyd wilson who is also a member of EXEK.
