LUCY PHELAN is a musician and sound artist working in areas of production, live performance and installation. For the past 15 years, she has played music under her own name, as well as various guises including Lucy Cliché and Loose-y Crunché, and collaboratively with Half High, Naked On The Vague and Knitted Abyss. At SS2, Lucy will perform using an all hardware set-up, exploring experimental electronic territory and the serene.

BEN CAREY is a Sydney-based saxophonist, composer and technologist. Ben makes electronic music using the modular synthesiser, develops interactive music software and creates audio-visual works. His work has been performed and exhibited nationally and internationally including at Huddersfield Festival of Contemporary Music (UK), the dBâle festival of electronic music (Switzerland) and the New York City Electronic Music Festival (USA). At SS2, Ben will perform a new work for the modular synthesiser, exploring sounds and processes recently developed in the creation of his forthcoming album, Antimatter, released on Hospital Hill records.

In a special collaboration, JONATHAN WILSON + MATTHEW MCGUIGAN will perform as a duo on guitar and modular synthesiser. Jonathan is a composer and curator who releases music under the moniker Red Kangaroo, and also as one half of Sydney/LA duo Castratii. He recently co-composed the music for the ABC series Seven Types of Ambiguity and curated Masters of Modern Sound at the Art Gallery of NSW as part of Sydney Festival. Matthew is a musician, filmmaker, sound engineer and founder of record label and production house Hospital Hill. As a guitarist, he has worked with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and Sydney Chamber Opera among others. Hospital Hill’s catalogue includes works by Merzbow, Jessica Aszodi, Anthony Pateras, Oren Ambarchi + Martin Ng, and Ben Carey.

ALEXANDRA SPENCE makes installations, compositions and performances based on (everyday) sound and listening. With an interest in resonance, vibration and everyday sound, her aesthetic favours small sounds, object interventions, and usual sound sources played in unusual ways. Alex has performed and presented work in in Australia, Canada, Europe, and Asia. She recently released her debut album Waking, She Heard The Fluttering, on Room40, receiving favourable reviews in The Wire Magazine and The Quietus. (She also holds the pseudo-scientific belief that electricity might actually be magic).

MEGAN ALICE CLUNE shifts between musician, composer and artist. Primarily, her work consists of a dissection of musical elements and contexts through verbal or text-based scores, sound installation and collaboration. As a solo artist and in various incarnations of Alaska Orchestra, Megan has presented work and undertaken residencies across Australia, Europe and North America.

SS2 is curated by Luke de Zilva and co-curator by Megan Alice Clune.

All performances accompanied by visuals.
