The Breath of Ashtanga with Ty Landrum
Perth, Australia - February 16-23, 2020
ASHTANGA YOGA -
Ashtanga Vinyasa works with opposing forces of breath and invites these forces to align. When the breath aligns, the experience of the body opens up, uncovering endless patterns of sensation. The practice is to be present with sensation, allowing it to unfold in the open expanse of awareness. Through this practice, we give ourselves space, and we allow our minds to breathe. Our thoughts and feelings begin to expand and contract in an unbroken flow of consciousness.
As the practice deepens, we learn to hold ourselves here, in the silence beneath our minds. In the solvent of a deeper awareness, our arguments with reality begin to dissolve. Rather than resisting the natural flow of things, we begin to go along, and instead of being subordinated, we feel ourselves moving with an inner intelligence. In the flow of this intelligence, we can breathe sweetly through the forms, and we revel in the quiet exhilaration of being alive.
MYSORE - (16 Feb - 23 Feb - 7 days - No Saturday)
This is a traditional Mysore-style self-directed Ashtanga class. Students of all levels lead themselves through the Ashtanga Vinysa sequencing while receiving individual guidance and support. Intended for people with an established Mysore practice. If you do not have an established Mysore practice, please be familiar with the standing sequence, or ask permission to attend. People with injuries or special conditions who need to modify the practice in any way are absolutely welcome to attend.
PRANAYAMA - ( Sunday 16 and 23 Feb)
Pranayama is the art of listening to the breath, of giving space to the subtle currents of sensation that move throughout the body. As the breath aligns, these currents break and swirl into intricate patterns that reflect the unobstructed play of our intelligence. And as we immerse ourselves in these patterns, with complete attention, we uncover the open radiance of our awareness. In this workshop, we explore the fundamentals of pranayama. We learn the elements of posture, bandha, mudraand attention that bring the practice alive.
PHILOSOPHY: THE FEMININE SUBLIME - (Sunday 16 Feb)
In Tantric philosophy, the feminine is the natural principle of creation. She is abundant, excessive, unpredictable, and threatens to overwhelm us when she overflows. The secret of yoga practice is to make space within consciousness for the spontaneous movement of the feminine principle, and to adore its immediate unfolding, even as it overwhelms the ego. In this philosophy talk, we explore the nature of the feminine, and the possibility of relating to the feminine intimately, through a colorful retelling of the Myth of Sati, “she who is.”
SURYA NAMASKAR - ( Led Class - Friday 21 Feb)
The backbone of the Ashtanga system is Surya Namaskar, the Salutation to the Sun. In the context of yoga, the Sun is not only the celestial body that gives us warmth and daylight, but the solar center of the subtle body, where our vital forces converge. In Surya Namaskar, we are propitiating to these forces, inviting them to rise up through the central axis of the body, burn away our delusions and give us insight. In this session, we explore the internal mechanics of Surya Namaskar, learning to practice with greater presence, precision and fluidity. Open to practitioners of all levels.
PHILOSOPHY: TASTING THE POISON - ( Sunday 23 Feb)
Yoga is said to be the antidote for the poison of conditioned existence. When the practice starts to work, the poison comes to the surface, darkening the waters of our minds. This experience can be troubling. It can induce shame, repression and other serious obstacles to practice. In this workshop, which is an exploration of yoga philosophy and mythology (and involves no formal practice as such) we discuss the process of meeting these experiences with compassion, and turning the poison into insight.
MASTERCLASS - SATURDAY 22 FEB
The practice of backbending is about making ourselves vulnerable, while finding the internal support to handle that vulnerability with elegance and grace. When we connect to the sources of our internal support, backbending becomes an exhilarating and sensual practice, with tremendous opportunity for deep psychical release. In this session, we learn to work intelligently with the diaphragm, the psoas, the pelvic girdle and the obliques to create a long and supple spine that can reach gracefully into these difficult forms. This session is open to practitioners of all levels, but will involve a full practice, using postures and adaptations from the first and second series.
LIFTING, TWISTING AND FOLDING
The natural counterpoint to backbending is what we might call “the coiling pattern.” This pattern emerges all over the Ashtanga practice, and provides an extraordinary ground of psychophysical support, by awakening the dissolving forces of the descending breath that remove excess from the body and mind. In this session, we explore the coiling pattern as an integral component of lifting, twisting, folding, and potentially putting the legs behind the head. This session is open to practitioners of all levels, but will involve a full and deep practice, using postures and adaptations from the first and second series.
