Understanding autism and effective strategies to support for SSO/ESO/LSOs - Professional Development General Workshop - NETLEY
Date and Time
Autism SA has a highly experienced and diverse training team which includes consultants, occupational therapists, speech pathologists and facilitators who have extensive experience in working with individuals on the autism spectrum in a range of settings.
General Workshops are designed to give participants a better understanding of autism. These sessions present a broad range of effective strategies that participants can use to improve their practice when working with individuals on the spectrum. These workshops are suited to participants who have not attended previous Autism SA workshops.
In Focus Workshops are designed for participants who have a good general knowledge and understanding of autism. These sessions are for those wanting to enhance their professional practice by developing skills to support individuals in specific areas relating to autism. It is recommended that participants first attend a General Workshop prior to attending an In Focus Workshop.
This is a General Workshop that has been developed specifically for SSO’s, ESO’s and LSO’s who want a better understanding of autism and a range of effective strategies to use when supporting a student on the spectrum.
Supporting a student on the autism spectrum can be both challenging and very rewarding. This workshop recognises the important role of Support Officers within the educational sector. The program allows time for participants to share their ideas and successes, and network with other participants. Presented by professionals with significant experience working with individuals on the autism spectrum, the topics covered include:
• Understanding autism;
• Developing a relationship with students;
• The role of support staff and how to provide effective support;
• Enhancing communication and social interaction;
• Increasing student engagement;
• Positive behaviour strategies when working 1:1, in groups and in the classroom;
• Strategies to support sensory needs;
• Support and services; and
• How to look after your own needs on the job!
Throughout the workshop the presenter will use discussion, activities and videos to deliver information specific to support staff working with students at both primary and secondary school, that will enhance the participant’s knowledge of autism, and strategies to enable them to provide effective support and inclusion.
All participants will receive a certificate with the workshop title, the number of hours and will state that the training links to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (where appropriate).
