'Using Narrative Theory and Participant Observation in qualitative research projects'  

This is the ninth session in the ten-part series: Qualitative Data Analysis at UTS. The aim of this series is to showcase and celebrate the diverse and innovative ways UTS researchers are working with qualitative data.

This session will explore participant observation as a qualitative research method, and consider the benefits and drawbacks of using observation as the basis for empirical research and analysis. 

Drawing on her work observing the legal hearings of asylum seekers in Australia and Canada, Dr Anthea Vogl will explore the unique nature of observational data. The workshop will then consider how narrative theory and narrative-based methodologies can be used to analyse qualitative data, including but not limited to observational data. 

Workshop participants will be given an opportunity to engage in participant observation and narrative analysis, and to consider how it might fit within their own research.*
