Waratah was once one of Newcastle’s largest municipalities.

Its history was shaped by the forces of coal mining, urbanisation, industrialisation, transport, religion and education. Despite the recent impact of aggressive commercialism, urban consolidation and an expanding educational facility, much of Waratah’s charm and character remains in streetscapes and remnant buildings----even the sweep of some corners has a story to tell.

Who designed Waratah’s School of Arts? Who was David Drummond? Where was Hopkins’ Shop? Who once lived in “Knoyle”?

How old is the licence of the Town Hall Hotel? Come along on our stroll and find answers to these questions whilst experiencing the historic fabric of one of Newcastle’s suburban gems.

Come along on the Sunday morning and take a walk with your host for the walk, Mr Ed Tonks who is a well known Newcastle historian and author and knows the history of this suburb very well. This is perfect for locals and those new to the suburb as well as local history lovers, walkers up for a sunday stroll and those who would just love to know more about our local history.

Walking route is not difficult but we will be walking along roads and along pathways that will require a moderate mobility.

Please bring hats, sunscreen and water in case it is a warm morning.
