This working group will focus on 'Planning and Scheduling for Maintenance'
(Asset Lifecycle Series)

Proper maintenance and scheduling, when done right, can greatly increase productivity.

The 34th president of the United States and an American army general, Dwight D. Eisenhower is famous for making the paradoxical statement, "In preparing for battle, I have always found that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable." He meant that plans go ‘out the window’ once an actual emergency arises; however, the planning process makes you thoroughly explore all possible options and possibilities. The knowledge you gain from planning is vital when it comes to choosing appropriate actions.

Maintenance planning can be defined as an end-to-end process that identifies and addresses any possible issues ahead of time. Maintenance planning should define the "what," "why" and "how."

Maintenance scheduling refers to the timing of planned work, when the work should be done and who should perform it. It offers details of "when" and "who."

Here is an opportunity to find out the do’s and don’ts of effective maintenance planning.

Asset intensive organisations know that effective maintenance planning is one of the cornerstone processes to help ensure equipment reliability and assist with attaining operational excellence.

Benefits include increased utilisation of tradespeople, reduced equipment downtime, lower spare parts holding and many more.

Some discussion points may be around.

  • What are the things to do to be effective at maintenance planning?
  • What is the desired skill set of a good planner?
  • How do you educate you maintenance planners?
  • How is the plan communicated so preparation can occur?
  • Is the difference between planning and scheduling clear?
  • What is your review and improvement process?
  • What KPI should we be measuring to understand the performance?
