Paying tribute to aid workers who risk their lives in Humanitarian service andrally support for people affected by crises around the worldis a significant yearly commemoration by World Humanitarian Day. Over 130 million people throughout the world are currently in crises, either through war or natural disasters and need humanitarian aid. More and more people are seriously motivated by a desire to give back to the world by increasingly seeking out ways that allow them to participate in community service activities. 

As organisations worldwide honour this day UNAA would like to recognise the compassion and bravery of people who unselfishly attempt to save lives and provide relief to those most in need through innovative way using technology to improve humanitarian aid.

Guest Speakers 

Dr. Munjed Al Muderis is an Australian Associate Professor in orthopaedic surgery, author and human rights activist. His pioneering work on prosthetics and patentson titanium devices that he designed places Australia at the forefront of osseointegration technology. Al Muderis was born in Iraq and became a surgeon under the regime of Saddam Hussein.

Michael Heiman is managing the APOPO program in Cambodia. APOPO is a non-profit organization famous for its use of Giant African Rats to detect mines, explosive remnants of war and Tuberculosis. The mission of APOPO is to develop animal detection technology to provide solutions for global problems and inspire positive social change. Cambodia is the largest APOPO Mine Action Program, integrating animals with machines and manual deminers in three different provinces and recently established the first training center outside Africa, to train special dogs for survey and investigation of hazardous areas in South East Asia. Prior to joining APOPO he was working in Mine Action in Israel and Palestine, leading numerous surveys and mine clearance tasks, writing operational standards, building training and accreditation areas, testing equipment, machines and animals. 

Naomi Steer is the founding director of Australia for UNHCR. Naomi is a passionate advocate for refugees, with a deep understanding of the issues affecting displaced people. She has worked in human rights and refugee issues since she began her career as a diplomat with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, with postings at the United Nations in New York and in India.
