Event description

It's time for another delightful evening of entertainment by the Katherine River...BlockGigs presents DARREN HANLON

Darren Hanlon is known for his engagement with his audiences, through his down-to-earth storytelling. He is able to create a whole scene from the sum of its subtleties with his idiosyncratic wit interspersed with poignant moments. This May he is taking a break from recording his sixth studio album to perform a run of shows up through the centre of Australia.

The past 12 months have been busy for Hanlon with the usual rigorous touring schedule, including a journey through the Eastern states of the US with 78 yr old folk singer, Michael Hurley.

Another big achievement in 2018 for Hanlon was his production of an LP’s worth of Aboriginal country music called Buried Country. This was a co-release with famed US label Mississippi Records and his own label here in Australia Flippin Yeah Records. The album contains newly discovered lost musical gems and included a comprehensive 36 page booklet of oral history research Hanlon undertook throughout the year. This tour in May will see him returning to a lot of the places where he met and interviewed people for the Buried Country project.

The show will be opened by Julia Shapiro, lead singer of Seattle band Chastity Belt, yet another musical connection Hanlon has made through touring. The two met when they were both support acts for a Courtney Barnett US tour a few years back and became fast friends. “Julia has been to Australia a couple of times and played the cities with her band Chastity Belt,” says Hanlon, “But I’m excited to take her into the heart of the country to meet and play for the people out there. It’s a special thing not a lot of people get to experience.”
