Melbourne Kids SecuriDay 2020 Workshops

Cybergames (Capture the flag)  Ages 6 to 16
We’ve been running highly successful capture the flag events for youth for the past three years at various STEM and security events in Australia and around the world, and at the end of the day the kids all agree it’s the best workshop of the lot. This year we’re offering prizes to age group winners to increase the competition. We’re partnering with some of the best in the industry to develop unique challenges not seen before, to get the best outcome for all the participants. We’ll be offering mentoring to those playing to make sure they understand the concepts they’re working with and are inspired to persevere with previously unknown concepts.

Drone Fun, Safety, and Security Ages 6 to 16
This workshop combines both a theoretical and practical component that aims to educate children about drones and how drones can be helpful to us as a society, how they’re used for good, and how we can help to protect against them being used for bad.
The workshop topics include:

  • Drones for fun: demonstration and introduction to drones.
  • More than just fun: Jobs of the future and how drones help us in society.
  • Computers in the sky: An introduction to drone hacking and cyber-security.
  • Activity: Drones being used for bad – how can they be stopped?
  • Activity: Hands on fun with drones and how anyone can build a drone.

Hacking Games Ages 6 to 16
The Hacker board game will be taught to students on how the mind works of a hacker and there will be a workbook with storytelling (making it fun for younger ones too). and if children/teens are interested, they are welcome to learn how to code in Python using Scratch or PyGame.

Learning how to hack a bank Ages 6 to 16
Hacking a bank is no child's play. We are going to take a look at how to rob a bank from our laptops and steal money from the bank and each other! In the end, we have a bit of a competition to see who made the most! Yes, there will be prizes!

Robot Fun Ages 6 to 10
Kids will learn the basic commands to issue a robot so that the robot can achieve the desired goal. Flash cards with commands and drawings will be handed out for use. A small “program” will be created out of these commands and we will then model these actions based on role play - initially with the trainer being the Robot, and then the kids taking turns in small groups. The aim is to teach kids basic procedural steps and show what can go wrong by using fun examples.

Final schedule will be released Feb 1st.
