Event description

This month’s showcase topic is: Accessing capital for Social Enterprises & Aboriginal Businesses.

Social Ventures Australia (SVA) is a not-for-profit organisation that works with partners to alleviate disadvantage and work towards an Australia where all people and communities thrive.

Director of Impact Investing, Alex Oppes will discuss how SVA delivers better social outcomes for people by learning about what works in communities, helping organisations be more effective, and advocating for change.

Alex is joined by Derek Walker, CEO of Kuti Co and Jessica Jeeves of The Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation to talk about the establishment of Kuti Co and the role impact investing might play alongside other forms of capital.

Kuti Co is a Ngarrindjeri commercial venture and partnership with Goolwa PipiCo in the Lakes and Coorong pipi fishery. The Ngarrindjeri people have been harvesting kuti (pipis) in the Yarluwar-Ruwe (Sea Country) for over 10,000 years. Ngarrindjeri representatives established Kuti Co to invest in the pipi fishery to achieve commercial, employment and cultural outcomes and ongoing care for Ngarrindjeri country. The Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation supported Kuti Co with $5 million to buy pipi quota and acquire a fishing licence.

The Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation (ILSC) is a federal government body which has two purposes, as set out in the ATSI Act:

  • To assist Indigenous Australians to acquire land and water-related rights.
  • To assist in the management of Indigenous-held land and waters, however acquired.

The ILSC remit was expanded to include fresh and salt water-related rights February, 2019.

This SIINSA event is open to for-purpose organisations, impact investors, philanthropic foundations, peak bodies, and government representatives.

Light refreshments will be provided.
