Event description

Join award winning writer and editor Christine Piper as she presents her work-in-progress as Copyright Agency/UTS New Writer-in-Residence. Celebrating the completion of her residency, Piper will discuss why she's drawn to the idea of "the in-between" in writing her new novel and what it means to be writing about Australian ecological pioneers amid the environmental crises of the present. Dr Piper's talk will be followed by a Q and A with award-winning author and Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing, Dr Delia Falconer.

Christine Piper's in-progress second novel charts the journey of a pair of Queensland lungfish (known as "living fossils") from Australia to the 1933 Chicago World's Fair. Her first novel, After Darkness, won the 2014 The Australian/Vogel's Literary Award and was shortlisted for the 2015 Miles Franklin Literary Award, and is currently studied for the Victorian Certificate of Education.

Piper also won the 2014 Calibre Prize for her essay 'Unearthing the Past'. Her articles, reviews and short stories have been published in newspapers, magazines, journals and anthologies. She also works as a freelance editor. Born in Asia and raised in Australia, she has lived in Japan and the US.

Join us for a drink after the event to celebrate the end of a very productive residency.
